10 Tips to Stay Healthy

Bassett Creek Dental - 10 Tips to Stay Healthy

Staying healthy during Minnesota’s colder months takes more than just bundling up. Between flu season, RSV, and other common viruses making their rounds, now is a great time to boost your immune system and protect your overall well-being—including your oral health.

At Bassett Creek Dental, we believe healthy habits at home are just as important as regular dental visits.

Here are 10 simple ways to support your health this season:

1. Wash Your Hands the Right Way

Frequent handwashing is still one of the best ways to prevent illness. Use warm water and soap, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds—including between fingers, under nails, and around thumbs.

2. Fill Your Plate with Immune-Boosting Foods

Nutrient-rich foods like citrus fruits, leafy greens, and sweet potatoes are packed with vitamins that help your immune system fight off illness. Try incorporating more fresh, whole foods into each meal.

3. Stay Hydrated (Yes, Even in Winter!)

Dehydration can sneak up on you during colder months. Sip water throughout the day or warm up with hot water and lemon. Proper hydration supports energy, digestion, and even oral health.

4. Avoid Touching Your Face

It’s easier said than done—but limiting how often you touch your mouth, eyes, or nose can reduce your exposure to bacteria and viruses.

5. Move Your Body Every Day

Aim for at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week. Whether it’s walking the trails near Golden Valley, doing yoga at home, or chasing the kids around, regular movement improves circulation and immune function.

6. Prioritize Sleep

Getting 7–9 hours of sleep a night helps your body reset and recharge. Good sleep supports immune health, mental clarity, and stress management.

7. Consider a Vitamin D Supplement

Minnesota winters mean less sunlight. Talk to your doctor about adding a vitamin D supplement to help support your immune system and bone health—especially important for growing kids and aging adults.

8. Quit Tobacco for Good

Tobacco use is harmful to your immune system, lungs, heart, and oral health. If you’ve been thinking about quitting, now is the time. We’re happy to help connect you with local resources.

9. Limit Alcohol

Too much alcohol can disrupt sleep and suppress your immune system. Women should stick to one drink or fewer per day; men should aim for two or fewer.

10. Don’t Forget Your Oral Health

Oral health is deeply connected to your overall health. Brush twice a day, floss daily, and schedule regular dental checkups—especially if it’s been more than six months.
