Can’t I Just Buy One at the Store?

Yes, over-the-counter mouthguards are available. However, they will never fit quite right. The benefit of visiting your dentist is that your child’s mouthguard will be custom fit for their smile and unique bite. A proper fit ensures that their teeth and mouth will be better protected.

How Do I Get My Child to Wear It?

This can be a challenge, especially if your child is a teenager and worries more about looking cool than about their safety. Reminding them of wearing their mouthguard is the best way to make it a habit. They should consider their mouthguard as part of their required equipment to play. You may feel like a nag, but gentle reminders are the best way to create the habit.

How Often Do They Need to be Replaced?

The longevity of mouthguards varies. For example, if your child still has primary teeth, they must be refitted semi-regularly since their bite may change as their permanent teeth erupt. If your child has all of their permanent teeth and takes good care of their mouthguard, it may last up to six months. Having your child refitted at least every season for their sport of choice is recommended.

Mouthguards may need to be replaced more frequently if you begin to notice wear and tear and it is not being properly cleaned and stored.
