Back-to-School Dental Checkup for Sports Mouthguards

It’s hard to believe that the summer is already ending as we prepare our children to return to school. While school supplies and clothes may be on your to-do list, don’t forget about their regular dental checkup. If your child plans to play sports during the school year, a dental checkup may be necessary to help fit them for a sports mouthguard.

Here are some questions we frequently hear in regards to sports mouthguards for children.

Who Needs a Sports Mouthguard?

While many parents may not think baby teeth matter, the truth is they are essential. Trauma to the mouth that impacts primary teeth can affect your child’s smile into adulthood. Therefore, if your child plays any sport involving potential trauma, they should always wear a mouthguard when playing.

Here are just some of the sports in which your child should be wearing a mouthguard when playing:

  • Hockey
  • Lacrosse
  • Basketball
  • Football
  • Soccer

Can’t I Just Buy One at the Store?

Yes, over-the-counter mouthguards are available. However, they will never fit quite right. The benefit of visiting your dentist is that your child’s mouthguard will be custom fit for their smile and unique bite. A proper fit ensures that their teeth and mouth will be better protected.

How Do I Get My Child to Wear It?

This can be a challenge, especially if your child is a teenager and worries more about looking cool than about their safety. Reminding them of wearing their mouthguard is the best way to make it a habit. They should consider their mouthguard as part of their required equipment to play. You may feel like a nag, but gentle reminders are the best way to create the habit.

How Often Do They Need to be Replaced?

The longevity of mouthguards varies. For example, if your child still has primary teeth, they must be refitted semi-regularly since their bite may change as their permanent teeth erupt. If your child has all of their permanent teeth and takes good care of their mouthguard, it may last up to six months. Having your child refitted at least every season for their sport of choice is recommended.

Mouthguards may need to be replaced more frequently if you begin to notice wear and tear and it is not being properly cleaned and stored.

Schedule Your Visit

Now is the time to book your visit to fit your child for their mouthguard before their season of sports begins. Come prepared to your appointment with any additional questions you may have.
