Sports Mouthguards
Mouthguards can be a critical piece of equipment for any contact sports or activities that increase your risk of face, jaw, or tooth trauma. Like a helmet, mouthguards should be non negotiable. Children or young adults are especially at risk for trauma to the face while engaging in athletics.
When to Use a Mouthguard for Sports
While this list is not comprehensive, here are just some of the activities when you should wear a mouthguard:
- Football
- Soccer
- Wrestling
- Gymnastics
- Lacrosse
- Martial Arts
- Ice and Field Hockey
Getting Fitted for Mouthguard
A custom-made mouthguard is going to provide the most comfortable fit and will be recommended by your dentist if needed. A mold will be taken of your teeth and a custom mouthguard will be created to fit your unique bite and smile. This will provide the safest and most effective fitting mouthguard.
Caring for Your Mouthguard
Your dentist will advise when it’s time to replace your mouthguard, but it’s important to watch for any wear, damage, or fitting issues. If you do experience any issues you may need a new one. Additionally, children or young adults may need to replace their mouthguards more frequently as they are still growing.
Additional tips to caring for your mouthguard:
- When not using – keep it clean and dry
- Rinse before and after each use
- After use brush with toothpaste and toothbrush
- Bring it in during your regular visits to be examined
- Store and transport a sturdy container that has vents so it can dry and keep bacteria from growing
- Never leave the mouthguard in the sun or hot water
- Store away from pets
“I always dreaded going to the dentist, but this dental office is a very pleasant experience. I have always felt well taken care of, they are sensitive, and have been given good service. They hygienists are very friendly and very good. I also had complications after the removal of my wisdom teeth and they were very responsive and fit me in on short notice several times.”
