What Does a Teeth Cleaning Entail?
A standard cleaning generally includes X-rays when needed, a check of your teeth and gums, plaque and tartar removal, polishing and flossing, and an exam with your dentist.
Every appointment can look a little different depending on your oral health and how long it has been since your last visit. Here is what each part actually involves.
-
1
X-rays, when needed
You may have bitewing or full-mouth X-rays taken depending on how long it has been since your last set, your dental history, and whether there are any areas your dentist wants to take a closer look at. You will not necessarily need X-rays at every cleaning — your dental team determines when they are appropriate.
-
2
A check of your teeth and gums
Before and during your cleaning, your hygienist looks for signs of inflammation, gum disease, cavities, or other changes. This may include a periodontal probe to gently measure the spaces, or pockets, between your teeth and gums, which helps track your gum health over time.
-
3
Plaque and tartar removal
Next comes scaling. Your hygienist uses specialized instruments to remove plaque and hardened tartar from around your teeth and along the gumline — once plaque hardens into tartar, your toothbrush cannot remove it, which is one of the reasons regular professional cleanings matter.
-
4
Polishing and flossing
Once buildup is removed, your teeth are polished to clear surface stains and leave them feeling smooth. Your hygienist will also floss between your teeth to catch anything left behind and note areas that may need more attention in your at-home routine.
-
5
An exam with your dentist
Your dentist examines your teeth, gums, and mouth to confirm everything looks healthy and to flag anything that needs monitoring or treatment. It is also a great time to bring up anything you have noticed since your last visit — sensitivity, pain, bleeding gums, or a change in your bite.
