What Should I Expect at My Child’s Teeth Cleaning Appointment?

Once your child is comfortable sitting through a regular teeth cleaning, the appointment looks a lot like an adult cleaning, just a little more kid-friendly.

A typical child’s teeth cleaning for kids 4 and up may include:

  • A look at their teeth and gums to check how everything is looking and developing.
  • X-rays when needed based on your child’s age, dental history, and individual needs.
  • Removing plaque and tartar that brushing at home hasn’t taken care of.
  • Polishing their teeth to remove surface buildup and leave them feeling clean. Kids may even get to pick the flavor, and yes, bubblegum toothpaste is a real thing that exists.
  • Flossing between their teeth to clean the areas a toothbrush can’t easily reach.
  • Fluoride treatment when recommended to help protect their teeth from cavities.
  • An exam with the dentist to check their teeth, gums, bite, and overall oral health.

We Keep Kids in the Loop

We talk kids through what we’re doing as we go. Partly because knowing what’s happening can make the experience more comfortable, and partly so they’re not left wondering why someone is approaching them with a tiny mirror.

As kids become familiar with regular dental visits, the process usually becomes pretty routine: climb into the chair, get those teeth squeaky clean, have the dentist take a look, and head on with their day.
