When Does My Child Need to Start Getting Their Teeth Cleaned?

Most children should have their first dental visit by age one, or within about six months after their first tooth appears.

That can sound surprisingly early. After all, your one-year-old may only have a handful of tiny teeth. But those baby teeth can develop cavities, and starting dental visits early gives your dentist a chance to make sure your child’s teeth and gums are developing as expected.

Why Start Dental Visits Around Age One?

Early dental visits are largely about prevention.

Your dentist can check your child’s developing teeth, look for early signs of decay, and help you understand how to care for those tiny teeth at home.

Starting young also establishes a routine of regular dental care from the beginning rather than waiting until there’s a toothache or another problem that needs to be addressed.

What If My Child Is Older Than One and Hasn’t Been to the Dentist Yet?

Just make the appointment now.

The age-one recommendation is a guideline for when dental care should ideally begin, not a deadline you’ve failed if your child is already two, three, or older.

If your child hasn’t started seeing a dentist yet, we’ll meet them where they’re at and help you get them started with regular dental care.

When Should Kids Start Getting Regular Teeth Cleanings?

Your child’s dentist will recommend a preventive care schedule based on their age and individual oral health needs. For many children, dental visits are recommended about every six months.

As your child grows and more teeth come in, their cleanings will change along with them.
