What are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the third molars. Normally, people have three permanent molars that develop in each quadrant of the mouth: upper, lower, right and left. The first molars usually grow into the mouth at around six years of age. The second molars grow in at around age 12. The third molars usually will try to grow in at around age 15 to 21 years. Since that is considered to be the age when people become wiser, third molars gained the nickname wisdom teeth.
They are no different from any other tooth, except that they are the last teeth to erupt or grow into the mouth. They are just as useful as any other tooth if they grow properly, have a proper bite relationship, and have healthy gum tissue around them. Unfortunately, this does not always happen.
Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Wisdom teeth extraction can be done for teeth that have erupted or for teeth that are impacted. Your dentist will monitor your x-rays regularly and determine when they need to be extracted.
- When the time comes to have your wisdom teeth extracted you can expect:
- A visit before the surgery to discuss questions, recovery time, anesthesia type, etc.
- On the day of the surgery, you will need a driver and ideally a person to care for you after surgery.
- During the procedure, you will receive local anesthesia to numb the mouth. You may also receive IV and/or general anesthesia to allow you to sleep through the extraction process.
- After surgery, your oral surgeon or dentist will provide after-care instructions. This can be unique for everyone as every person is different.
“From the coffee in the waiting area through educating you on how to handle insurance claims, Bassett Creek Dental does everything well. The hygienists and assistants are friendly and capable and the Minneapolis dentists I see is wonderful! She is positive and reassuring with children, making my anxious daughter feel very comfortable about getting cavities filled. She crowned my tooth flawlessly and was even willing to take a late night call when I accidentally pulled the temporary out of my mouth! I would recommend Bassett Creek Dental – especially Dr. Bruning – to anyone.”
