The Importance of Baby Teeth

Becoming a parent is one of life’s most exciting milestones—and with it comes endless decisions, questions, and new information to absorb. Between sleep schedules, feeding choices, and baby gear, it’s easy to overlook baby teeth. But those tiny teeth matter more than you might think. At Bassett Creek Dental, we’re here to help you understand why baby teeth are important, how they support your child’s development, and how to care for them right from the start.

4 Reasons Baby Teeth Are So Important

They Serve as Placeholders for Permanent Teeth

Meaning, they hold space in the upper and lower jaw for permanent teeth that are growing under the gum line. When a baby tooth is lost too early, the permanent teeth can drift into the empty space and make it difficult for other adult teeth to find space when they come in.

They Help Baby or Youngster Chew

We have teeth for a reason and that is to chew up food for nourishment and baby/youngster needs their baby teeth to do just that until their permanent teeth come in.

Pronunciation

We use our teeth to enunciate and speak. This includes our baby teeth! Think about when a child loses both their front teeth, speech can become difficult on certain words and letters.

Smile

Our teeth make our smile and our smile is a big part of our identity.

Common Parent Concerns

What if my child knocks out a baby tooth?

Even though it’s a baby tooth, trauma should be evaluated by a dentist. You should bring your child in to be seen so a dentist can check for potentially hidden damage.

Do baby teeth need to be filled if they have cavities?

Yes. Cavities in baby teeth can cause pain and affect your child’s eating and speaking. Remember, baby teeth do matter!

Can thumb sucking or pacifier use affect baby teeth?

Prolonged habits can impact bite alignment, this is why regular checkups with your dentist are important at every age. We’ll monitor your child’s development and offer guidance if it becomes a concern. You can learn more about thumb sucking here.

Other Things to Know About Baby Teeth

  • Before baby’s teeth arrive you can begin to care for their gums by moistening a washcloth or piece of gauze and gently wiping down your baby’s gums at least twice a day, especially after feedings and before bedtime.
  • Most babies will develop teeth between 6 and 12 months.
  • Fluoride should be added to your child’s diet at 6 months of age.
  • You should brush your child’s teeth twice a day with a very small amount of fluoride toothpaste.
  • You should supervise brushing until at least 10 years of age.
  • Make your first dental appointment when the first tooth appears.
