Gum Disease Treatment

Periodontics - Gum Disease Treatment

Periodontics is the treatment of gum (periodontal) diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis, or chronic inflammation and infection of the gums and surrounding tissue. It is the major cause of about 70 percent of adult tooth loss, affecting three out of four persons at some point in their life.

Scaling

Early stages of gum disease can be treated in our office using a special deep cleaning method called scaling. This is when your dentist removes all the plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) above and below the gumline. During this procedure they will clean all the way down to the bottom of the pocket.

Root Planing

Root planing, which removes plaque and tartar around the tooth, and smoothing the root surfaces, may also halt periodontal disease. This involves cleaning deep below the gums to remove plaque and tartar buildup on the roots of teeth where the bones are affected by the infection.

Surgery

For advanced cases, periodontal surgery may be necessary. Periodontal surgery involves excising gum tissue surgically, removing the hardened plaque build-up and recontouring the damaged bone. The procedure is also designed to smooth root surfaces and reposition the gum tissue so it will be easier to keep clean.

“I always dreaded going to the dentist, but this dental office is a very pleasant experience. I have always felt well taken care of, they are sensitive, and have been given good service. They hygienists are very friendly and very good. I also had complications after the removal of my wisdom teeth and they were very responsive and fit me in on short notice several times.”
